In case anyone else has the same problem with pthreads...

Sat Dec 22 09:44:54 2007

Since it took me a while to figure out this problem with pthreads (POSIX threads), and didn't find anything in Google about it, here it is:

On Linux at least, it appears that a joinable thread's memory space is not deallocated if it is never joined (with pthread_join()), even if it is cancelled (with pthread_cancel()) or exits normally. This results in growing thread memory consumption (a memory leak, basically — valgrind noticed it) as new threads are created. Eventually pthread_create() returns the ENOMEM error code. On the computers I was using, this tended to occur after creating between 375 and 380 threads.

The solution is to create the thread with the "detached" attribute, or calling pthread_detach() on the thread. Then the thread resources appear to be freed (deallocated, destroyed, garbage collected) when the thread ends. (The hint to do this was a vague statement in some document that "joinable threads may result in slightly more resource usage"). I guess that it keeps the whole thread state and memory around even after it ends, since you could still call pthread_join() on it, though that call would presumably exit immediately, but also free the thread memory.

Marketplace: Obama can't change Washington alone

Thursday, 6 November 2008

On the NPR show Marketplace last night, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Reich">Robert Reich</a> (former Labor Secretary under Clinton) had a wonderful and inspiring idea: If Obama can transform his campaign support network into a people's policy/lobbying network, it could displace the industrial/corporate lobbyists in Washington. Read or listen to his commentary here: http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/11/05/reich/ . Is it possible? Would the Obama transition or administration leaders be interested in supporting anything like this? Or perhaps MoveOn or someone needs to jump on this now and get it started while we are still fired up about the new administration?

Print Your Own Money - Douglas Rushkoff on Boing Boing

Wednesday, 24 September 2008

"...Where localities had previously been free to mint their own currency based on the crops they had grown, now they were forced to borrow money from a central bank. This allowed the issuer of currency - the crown - to extract value from every transaction. Anyone who wanted to buy anything from anyone else had to run it through the central authority - coin of the realm - one way or the other.... This engendered competition for money, which was now a scarce currency issued at interest... bankruptcy was built into the currency system... Where does... money come from? Someone else who borrowed..." short essay by Rushkoff plus reader comments. (http://www.boingboing.net/2008/09/23/what-went-wrong.html#comment-290957 in particular is a nice complement)

Security Matters: How to Create the Perfect Fake Identity

Friday, 5 September 2008

Bruce Schneier: "...we all have a data shadow that follows us around, and that more and more institutions interact with our data shadows instead of with us. We only intersect with our data shadows once in a while -- when we apply for a driver's license or passport, for example -- and those interactions are authenticated by older, less-secure interactions. The rest of the world assumes that our photo IDs glue us to our data shadows, ignoring the rather flimsy connection between us and our plastic cards. (And, no, REAL-ID won't help.) ... It seems to me that our data shadows are becoming increasingly distinct from us, almost with a life of their own. What's important now is our shadows; we're secondary. And as our society relies more and more on these shadows, we might even become unnecessary. "
